Our new article, published in The Conversation, examines how U.S. tariffs on steel, aluminum, and autos translated into uneven labour-market impacts across Canada’s manufacturing sector in 2025. Drawing on Labour Force Survey data, we show that immigrant and Canadian-born workers experienced job loss, wage pressure, and employment instability at different points in the adjustment process.
The findings highlight how trade shocks intersect with existing inequalities around wages, credential recognition, and job security — and why more coordinated trade, industrial, and immigration policies are needed if manufacturing is to remain a stable source of employment.
